Pros and Cons of Biometric Locks

08/14/2013 Back To Blog

Keyed entry is the traditional method of securing properties like homes and buildings. A matching key is used to unlock the door and gain entry to the place. However, they are prone to break-ins as burglars can easily pick on the door locks to open the door even without using a key. Several companies are now transitioning to the use of keyless entry systems as they provide high security. Biometric lock system is one of these.

What is Biometric Lock System?

Biometric lock system does not use a key to unlock doors. They also do not use cards that are swiped on readers. Instead, your fingerprint or face will be scanned to gain access to a specific door. There are also those that use voice recognition or eye scanning. The most popular type of biometric lock system used is fingerprint scanning. Place your finger on the scanner and if it matches on the list of authorized people, the door will be opened.

Advantages of Biometric Lock

Like any other system, biometric lock also has its advantages and disadvantages. Knowing about its pros and cons will help you decide if it is, in fact, the best system for you or not. By using this system, you never have to worry about your lost keys, key change or lock change. It is more secured because there are no keys to duplicate, locks to pick or cards to tamper as the fingerprint, voice, eyes or face of the individual are used to unlock doors.

Disadvantages of Biometric Lock

The obvious disadvantage of this system is its price. The installation of the system is more expensive compared to other systems. Various issues may also affect its accuracy. For instance, the scanner may have problems reading the fingerprint of people whose hands are always exposed to chemicals because of their work. Also, the eyes and voice of individuals change as they grow old, which could affect the system if eye or voice recognition is used.
